Welcome to Criminal/Justice: The Death Penalty Examined blog

Carolina Performing Arts received one of eight APAP/Doris Duke Creative Campus awards for 2007 – 2008 to facilitate a year-long conversation Criminal/Justice: The Death Penalty Examined. This will be a campus-wide exploration of the events and issues that lead to capital punishment in our society. The project is about building community, raising awareness, and engaging in dialogue around this issue using the arts as a catalyst.

Through collaborations with faculty, students and staff in departments and centers across campus, the project will feature performances, photography, art exhibits, historical exhibits, films, student activities, lectures and discussions. A website, carolinacreativecampus.org, will provide updates, information and resources throughout the year. These thematic programs are in addition to the 2007-08 Carolina Performing Arts series.

We will be exploring issues of power, justice, society, the individual and the state, equality, and how our actions as individuals and as a society contribute to the path that leads to the cycle of crime and punishment. The arts will provide the foundation to explore stories, engage in perspectives, and confront these questions and our own impact on the events that result in state sanctioned executions.
