The State of Things

Freedom Rider Bill Svanoe and Mike Wiley, playwright and director of The Parchman Hour, will be featured today on WUNC’s The State of Things at noon.

In 1961, Bill Svanoe was 23 and a graduate student in economics at the University of Minnesota when he made his way south join the Freedom Riders. His journey started in Nashville, Tennessee on July 16 and ended in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was arrested for “Breach of Peace,” and then served time in Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm.

The Parchman Hour, presented by DDA Undergraduate Productions, opens tonight and runs through Monday, December 6th. For more information about the performance visit the event page.
