Aung San Suu Kyi

When I think of powerful voices of dissent, I am reminded of Aung San Suu Kyi – Burmese politician and freedom activist. She has spent 15 of the past 21 years under house arrest for opposing the oppression of the Burmese government. She has persevered in voicing her support for freedom and democracy in the face of a government that has, for years, tried and failed to silence her. She was imprisoned with no trial because the government believes she is likely to undermine the stability and peace of the country. The Burmese government has made it clear that if she goes to see her family living in the United Kingdom, she will not be permitted to return. Yet she stays, doing all she can to change her country for the better.

Aung San Suu Kyi has devoted her life to her people’s freedom, placing it above all else – even above her family. She has not given up voicing her dissent even in the face of punishment. Her passion is a model the rest of the world should follow.

She is an inspiration.
